Why did Bear Grylls do this!?

On his last show of Man vs Wild he found some Phaesant eggs and boiled them... when he cracked them open they were in the 3rd stage of development! Wouldn't they have felt pain being boiled? I don't know anything about Phaesant growth timing in the egg but it was around the 3/4 developed with claws tufts of hair and a hardened beak! It was quite disturbing for me because I have cared for wild Australian birds, and he ate it... Did he not think!? What's your opinion on this?
