I'm thinking of putting an electric or hybrid engine into an old VW Samba (bus)? Will this work?

Is this possible or not? I'm not sure. What modifications or conversions would be needed for this, especially to make the regenerative brake system work? I'm kind of new to cars, and no, I don't plan on getting Samba, but if I ever do, I want to think of a way to make it more energy efficient.
