I have some questions about African Grey Parrots?

My grandpa has been 'babysitting' someones African Grey parrot for awhile now, and he takes the best care he can of her, but its not quite adequate. I've been trying to help out, mostly with simple things like cleaning out her bowls and setting up her wood bars to sit on and her toys. She's very nippy though, and freaks out every time I open the cage. I can't get her out of the cage because her feathers, nails, and beak need to be clipped, but I would like to try and get her more socialized while I wait for them to be clipped. Do you have any suggestions for me to get her to calm down and become more friendly?
